How does a painting develop?

How does a new painting develop??

Step #1 Starts with sketching the details in pencil.

Step #2 Begins with blocking in washes of the main focus colors.

Step 3. Begin to add details to fur and post.

Step 4. Begin to detail top rails and shadows on crate using layered washes.

Step # 5 Continuing to add layers of detail to fur, post and rail using layers of cooler colors to create depth and texture. At this point a masking fluid is applied to the outer edges of the kitten's body to preserve some fur highlights and on the whiskers.

Step #6 Several layers of rich washes are applied to the background area and over portions of the rail and wire crate. Darker details in the shadow of the kitten and post are painted in.Once this is dry, the masking fluid is removed from the painting revealing a fuzzy hairy kitten outline and whiskers! They look a little scary at this point!
